Free/cheap camping NSW/Queensland

Hi, We are about to start a trip from Newcastle NSW heading North to the Great Barrier Reef.

It’s our first big trip with the kids in a camper van and we are nervous about not having any camp sites booked.

How easy is it to free camp along the coast? Are there areas where you can just pull up and stay for the night or do we need to seek out cheap camp sites? Part of our trip is going to be in Easter school holidays.
