Best inland route from Melbourne to Tweed Heads

Hello!
After Christmas, our young family (4 & 6yr olds) are moving from Melbourne to Tweed Heads. We'd love to experience some of the country and drive via an inland route over 2 weeks to our destination. We would really value some advice on great places to see / stop and stay. We won't have tents / caravan but are open to any other forms of accommodation. Would love some suggestions. Many thanks in advance. :)

Zoo

Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo is fantastic.

We rode our bikes around the zoo, or you can hire bikes there.

We also stayed overnight in the zoo in their tents and got to visit some of the animals at night and first thing in the morning when they were being fed.

Highly recommend it.

Some thoughts...

Depends how far inland you want to go. Mildura, Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Bathurst and Parkes are all wonderful places.

Inland there is also the Hunter Valley, Tamworth and obviously Canberra. There are plenty of things to do in each town.

Drop into the information centres, they are always great for activities and things to see and do.

No matter where you go through in January it is going to be stinking hot! So maybe take that into consideration with accommodation.

Have fun!
