TAWK Featured Family
"Greers Great Aussie Adventures"

1.  Who are you?

We are the Greer Family. We have been full time on the road for three and a half years with no end date in sight. We are traveling in our self customer built Jayco Expanda towed by our vintage 1968 Jeep Truck. At this stage, it's just the three of us.

2.   Why did you make your decision to TAWK?

We decided to start TAWKing for three main reasons.

  1. Seeing our daughter for only a few hours a day just wasn't enough and we felt she could learn more from travelling and seeing Australia than sitting in a classroom.
  2. We wanted to be able to spend more time together as we loved travelling and camping but never really found the time or energy to do it getting stuck in the daily grind. We only had desires to travel one country and we wanted to see the real Australia.
  3. As Ray is legally blind (and always has been) we wanted to make to the most of this opportunity and see Australia before he can't see anything!!

3.   How did you get organised and how did you prepare?

We made our decision to TAWK very quickly, it just felt right. We had no hesitation in selling EVERYTHING and put the wheels in motion to empty our house out. We already had our van and we already had our car, so within a few months, we had everything sold up and hit the road.

4.  What has been your biggest joy?

Our biggest joy has been being able to spend everyday together and experience every new adventure as a family. To share all the excitement, the ups and downs, together as a team. And being able to watch our daughter grow and develop before our eyes.

Also, seeing parts of this amazing country with your own eyes rather than in books and on TV has been completely surreal.

5. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Our biggest challenge has been when the gearbox blew in our car, only about 12 months in. We were in the middle of nowhere and stress and tensions were running very high!! We organised a tilt tray back to the nearest town, then went about finding a house sitting job so we could have our car fixed without the stress and costs adding up more than they needed to.

6.   Where have you enjoyed the most and Where disappointed you the most?

We thoroughly enjoyed South Australia....pretty every spot we went to. It was just beautiful, had amazing food, the roads were pretty good and we just enjoyed everything about our time spent there.

The place that disappointed us the most was Central Western Australia. It was very expensive, there was a lot of driving and many hours spent in the car to get from one place to the next and the scenery wasn't all that nice either. Just an all round very average experience.

7.   How did you get organised with schooling, what did/do you do and how did you come to that decision?

For schooling, we went straight for Distance Education. After plenty of research, phone calls and asking for advice on travel pages on Facebook, it seemed like the easiest and most convenient option to get is going.

However, this coming year, we will be moving to Homeschooling, for the flexibility and freedom that it offers.

8.   What surprised you most about the trip?

The thing that surprised us most has been how rude people actually are, especially those working in customer service. There was no particular incident or place, it has just been very surprising how many places seem put out by your presence and business, which we though was very odd.

9.   What would be three pieces of advice to give to future TAWKers?

Our 3 pieces of advice are:

  1. Be smart about entertainment for your kids. Not everyday is perfect, i.e bad weather. It doesn't have to be heaps of things, bit do put the effort in to have things your child/ren enjoy.
  2. Even though you are on your trip, still treat yourself to a 'holiday'. Go somewhere a little nice for a week or even just a few days and spoil yourself as a family.
  3. Always make time for Mum & Dad time. Whether is just an 'inhouse' date night where you make something nice for the two of you for tea (while you try to keep the kids inside) and dine out under the stars by a fire....it doesn't have to be anything fancy, but definitely still do it. Not time to sit down and talk about the kids or the trip or finances or anything like that.

10.   How do you think that this adventure has changed your family?

This adventure has definitely brought us a lot closer as a family and improved the way we all interact with each other. We have gained a better understanding of each other's likes and dislikes and has helped us learn how to actually be there for each other.

Also, take time to settle into your new living situation. It really is a massive lifestyle change for everyone. For some, it takes time to get used it but it will get better. And DON'T RUSH!! There is so much of this amazing country to see that's not listed in a travel brochure or book. It's not just about the big ticket tourist items. Do your research and see the things that suit you and matter to your family. We're all different.

Finally, never be afraid to walk up and talk to other travelling families, you never know when you might just make a new friend. They also, may have some handy tips and tricks that might just help you.
