'The Happy Hobo's'

1.  Who are you?

We are The Happy Hobo's.  Harvey, Paulette, Kaden 15 & Libby 10 plus our two dogs a chocolate Labrador Milo & Yorkshire terrier Pep.

We are a blended family that moved to Australia from the UK in 2017. Harvey wanted to return home. Harvey is a truck driver and mechanic, Paulette was an administrator. We left on our lap from Portland Victoria Dec 2020.

2.   Why did you make your decision to TAWK?

A mixture of circumstances lead to our decision to go for it.  We have always enjoyed travelling and had itchy feet. We sadly lost our home , possessions and cat to a electrical fire in 2018. Covid hit Victoria and Paulette's dad passed away in the UK and we were unable to return for the funeral due to Covid. 

So lessons were learnt over the last few years of what is important: Time as a family making memories. ❤

3.   How did you get organised and how did you prepare?

Our newly rebuilt house was valued high so we sold up in record time and things moved fast.  We already had our caravan so that was prepared and packed. All our possessions were put into storage. We resigned from our jobs, left schools and left.

4.  What has been your biggest joy?

Far too many to list all. Precious family time. Seeing some amazing sights.

5. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Covid, juggling border closures,  lockdowns and also running from the cyclone. Not to mention being alone 24/7 in a small box with no escape.

6.   Where have you enjoyed the most and Where disappointed you the most?

We absolutely loved Wave Rock, Sandy Cape, Semaphore, Ningaloo, and Middle Lagoon to name just a few. 

We were disappointed to miss a couple places on our wish list either due to Covid closures or being booked out for weeks (it's mad out here).

7.   How did you get organised with schooling, what did/do you do and how did you come to that decision?

This was our biggest concern, the eldest school was not helpful. TAWK put us in contact with Home Schooling Supplies Australia. Valerie, was so helpful and reassuring. We then met Mandy from TAWK at the Perth Caravan and Camping Show who reassured us even more. (Awww, thanks guys - Mandy )

The kids have grown up so much and become so much more confident.

8.   What surprised you most about the trip?

How quickly the time has gone. 

9.   What would be three pieces of advice to give to future TAWKers?

Our 3 pieces of advice are:

  1. Pack wisely, you don't need it all and weights is a huge issue.
  2. Be flexible,  our trip and plans change almost weekly. 
  3. Just do it, memories and quality time can never be replaced.

10.   How do you think that this adventure has changed your family?

We have all changed, relaxed, less stressed. Kids are far more confident.  And even the dogs are more sociable and better behaved.  I'd say probably it's been life changing. We are not sure if we will settle back into the normal rat race again and are looking at our future direction.
